Remote File Management using Bearer Independent Protocol(Bip):

Bearer Independent Protocol:

This is also referred as BIP commonly in the industry, used for remote file management on the UICC card by the operator. The speed at which the data can be transferred is inevitable along with the changes in technology and UICC is no longer a exception to it . Operators are looking for a way which is far better when compared to the traditional Remote File Management using SMS (SMS-PP).

SMS has a disadvantage of having 160 bytes as the data limit and if the operator wants to add any java applet to the UICC card over the air which is few KB's also will take so many sms's to be transferred to the card, even if one sms is corrupted or not recieved...again the process has to be restarted.

Here comes the advantage of having the Bearer Independent Protocol, replacing the traditional RFM over SMS , by establishing a data channel with the server setted up by the operator and there by can do data transfer relentlessly over the channel established.

The main advantages for this is it can use the highly reliable data transfer mode the TCP/IP or the UDP acting like both a server and a client with the data transfer speeds varying as per the underlying technology... which is far better when compared to the approach of RFM over sms.

Note : RFM=> Remote File Management

In the coming sessions I will be posting the ways which are used to do RFM over BIP.

Ravi~
